Fleas: signs and control
Fleas are rarely just on the pet. Eggs and larvae build up in carpets, bedding and soft furnishings, so the property needs attention as well as the animal.
Signs of fleas
- Pets scratching or biting themselves
- Small bites around ankles and lower legs
- Tiny dark specks in pet bedding or carpets
- Fleas jumping on pale socks or carpets
Why they keep coming back
Fleas complete most of their life cycle away from the animal. Treating only the pet, or only the house, often leaves the problem going.
What we do
- Inspect where the pets sleep and spend time, indoors and outdoors
- Treat the property with products suited to the areas involved
- Explain the preparation needed, such as vacuuming and washing bedding
- Advise you to speak to your vet about treating your pets at the same time
What you can do
- Vacuum regularly, especially where pets rest, and empty the bag or bin outside
- Wash pet bedding on a hot cycle
- Keep pets on a vet-recommended flea treatment
- Tell us about pets, birds and fish before treatment
